i am having a hard time getting my company to replace hard surface weld on the back elbow on the 43m putz that i run .our machanic thinks it is better just to buy a new one because it is cheaper to replace it than it is to weld the old when the hard surface wears off. he thinks we should just go by the yearage log

I would just have him replace it and get you a transition cover for the ass end...You can get them from Seattle Tarp company www.seattletarp.com

are they pricey

cheaper than a lawsuit....The transition covers I believe are around $100.00 but dont quote me on that...

We hard face our transitions and get another couple of years out of them easily. And if you're pushing your transitions that far that you need a "blastshield" you pretty much deserve what you get. Just my opinion right or wrong.

My opinion. If you can't afford a new swing elbow by the time it wears out; somethings not right.

Weave, I have seen transitions, reducers and elbows fail on brand new machines with only a few thousand yards through them!

No one deserves to get blasted? Why dont you come stradle my transition on a 400 foot vertical push and see what it feels like when the O-ring blows grout into your nuts???

Hows that for getting blasted??? PUMP-OFF!

Ya know this is strange, you are very inept. If it was me,this is the short story. If your getting the run around about the trans elbow then I would invest in the blast net myself, just to cover my butt.

It does wonderfull things to stick a couple of loads of mud up an owners ars because they were stuipid. They do in fact have gauges to measure thickness but sounds like they have the answer.Just cover your butt, buy the net and pad the time sheet to cover it.Feel free to tell them I said so,what a bunch of undicided people.

Look out for the right things in life

I agree that if you are doing hard surface welding inside your cast transition and or elbows you need a scattershield. There is a right way and a wrong way to do that welding. Why take the chance. I think all transitions and rear end parts should be covered, up to and including the 45 at the 5" end of the 6x5.

The worst that could happen is that you did not need it. ;~)

I once did a cost study on hard-facing old transitions and discovered that it was more economical and safer to replace with factory built. Liability for the company on a rebuilt piece can be astronomical, let alone comparing cost of materials, electricity, labor, welding equipment. Buy new and invest in cover to reduce possibility of costly litigation.

I'm not saying anybody deserves to get hurt. It's when people try to get every last yard out of something plus a little more that's were i was going with that subject. And for the record yes i have had o-rings ,wedge pin bolts etc. come apart. That's how i spent my 1st month on a new pump. So i cover the whole backend.  Did'nt mean to piss you off TooTall but the way the economy is going you're going to see safety issues being pushed to save a buck.

Some years ago my dad ran a 600 gate valve, and instead of goin to schwing and buyin the wedges he thought he would save some money by making his own, so he found a section of truck spring and set about cutting and shaping some new ones. When he went out next with the pump it blocked and sent the wedges off like bullets in all directions, since the steel was sprung it had no give in it to actually wedge the siamese into place. luckily no one was hurt. Lesson was learnt in cost saving tho.!!

I was'nt pissed Weave, maybe a little grouchy? I was making the point that it does'nt have to be wore out in order for it to blow or fail. I know few people who have been hurt by thing blowing, breaking or falling apart on the business end of a pump.

T.T.

You did it again ! ;~)

That has all the makings of a new hard hat sticker...... I can see it now; a big diaper, pins and all on the infant son of the pump god, little baby "Trailer"

The wording on the sticker is simple
