I was at a Mack dealer and learned about a potential problem you should be aware of. There is a bracket on the MRU style Chassis with the MP 7 and MP 8 engine This is the new style design with the after treatment system on them “Regen” On the drivers side front there is a bracket that secures the Fan Shroud to the side of the motor, it is secured with 2 bolts, if they come loose the Fan Shroud can sag into the fan and this causes major problems the fan shatters sending parts of the fan into the Radiator and all over, Picture this “ PUMP OFF” fan destroyed and a lot of other stuff in the front of the engine. PLEASE take the time to check these 2 bolts and the other mount hardware surrounding the shroud it could save you a lot of grief, I have asked several guys to check theirs and most all of them have found these 2 bolts loose.
The fix is this. Remove the bolts one at a time, apply loctite to the bolt and reinstall to the appropriate torque for the bolt size. Then do the other bolt, it takes 15 to 20 Minutes, and can save a job.
This applies to any unit mounted on a Mack MRU Chassis TB or Pump MP 7 and MP 8
If you don’t have a truck of this style tell a friend it will save them. I have taken pics of the bolt location on MRU MP 7 and MP8 |

Dont over torque the bolts and break them off, the loctite and proper torque will work. Standard torque for bolt size will work or call Mack if you are not sure. |

Failure to check these bolts will lead to a bad day. |

Please use caution when doing this, you will need to tilt the cabin so remove the keys, and make sure to clear away anything that will remove or break the windows when tilting the cab. Never work under the cabin without it properly suported when raised up. Please let me know if you find your bolts loose.

Good info! And thanks. I appreciate all the tips like this I see that help eliminate potential problems and try to pass them along to others. We have 2 Macks that are 2008 so I passed to those operators for a quick check. May save us buying some mud one day!! |

remember to make sure the gear shifter is in neutral before you raise/lower the cab... it can be difficult to drive without a range selector.... hahaha :D |

I just did an engine service on my mack and did notice the bolts were loose as well. I used locktite 242 to make sure that they were not going to loosen again. That is a great tip to watch for. Also I had to re align the fan shrowd as it had sagged a bit as well. |
