What is the old saw? “Nothing succeeds like success.” Well here is another one. “Nothing brings the message of safety home like the word of the person in charge of production.”

We safety people like to think that we bring positive changes in the work habits of the ‘troops’. Sometimes that is true. Most often it is a word from ‘the boss’ that makes a difference. When an operator hears his owner or manager say the words; “If you do not think that it is safe to do it that way then do not do it.”  Then and only then does it strike the operator as reality.

Going in to the holiday season we need to all have a better appreciation of what an injury or death of a family member does to those that care about him. So, to all the pump owners and managers out there I would like to say: Please, lead by example; show your employees that you respect their knowledge and ability. Ask them to be careful, and watch out for themselves, their families and their co-workers. Coming from you it has a lot of influence and meaning. ;~)
