BG Group’s Queensland Curtis LNG project marked a major milestone in early February 2013 when a 900-tonne steel dome roof was raised into place on top of the first liquefied natural gas storage tank at the LNG export plant on Curtis Island, Australia.

In a remarkable feat of engineering, mechanical fans placed under the dome gradually elevated the roof inch by inch inside the 38-metre-high tank by increasing air pressure only enough to inflate a party balloon.

It took three hours to raise the 79-metre diameter roof.

At the end of the operation, welders attached the roof to a steel ring embedded in the concrete walls. The roof will now be covered with concrete and the interior of the tank insulated and lined with nickel steel to keep the natural gas liquefied at minus 162 degrees Celsius.

Four pumps will be installed to transfer LNG to a jetty, where the gas will be loaded on specially built vessels for transport to Asia-Pacific markets.

"The roof lift is not only a remarkable engineering feat, requiring precision and exceptional teamwork, but signals that our project is well on the way to producing first LNG in 2014,” said QCLNG Project Director Mitch Ingram.

"First gas is expected to be delivered to the LNG plant around the end of the year to enable the start of commissioning."

The LNG plant is well on track to make the first commercial sales of LNG in the second half of 2014.
