the pumps are tipping over not because of short rigging operators are sucking out riggers in with boom still  up in the air

Mr Barone, thanks for the pics and PLEASE don’t take offense to what I am going to add to this.

One common mistake made by operators of all ages is thinking the short sided outriggers are “Light” side out riggers and they get little or no pad. In this configuration the front and rear outrigger's are potentially subjected to FULL outrigger load, to be a real good setup display I would need to see Dunnage like under the left side of the truck also under the right.

I will sight an example. I did a video for PMA on a hot summer day to Demo OSS on a very similar unit; we set up in a school parking lot on asphalt. We did not pump concrete just demonstrated boom movement, I was questioned when I ordered heavy dunnage for the shoot 6 X 6 X 5 feet to be safe, I didn’t want to damage the soft asphalt.

We did the setup and shoot and ran the boom through-out the safe range for OSS and guess what ? the dunnage on the so-called light side was the side that left a small dent in the asphalt even with the 6X6 extra dunnage, if I had not done this I could have flipped the unit without even planning to pump !

So PLEASE all operators take care when using OSS, NEVER think of the light sided outriggers as LIGHT they are indeed all subject to full potential load during boom operation and should be padded and supported such.

There are now machines out there that have OSS and also a lot that do not, it is only safe and allowed by the factory manual to operate a unit as specified in the manual for the unit, if OSS is not present than it should not be practiced. With so many units in the field that have changed owners nowadays you might not have a copy of the manual to check out. Please Call and order one for your unit, they can be sent hard copy or digitally on CD but it could save a lot of problems for you.

Also the CSG at PMA is always willing to help with questions for your unit no mater what the age so feel free to call @ 800 890 0269.

Mo offense taken. That is now embeded into my head...See 26yrs and still learn more everyday.

I have a simple rule - Don't short rig. As in never. OSS or not, it's not worth it.

Thanks for the tip Travelteck, but like Doug said if you dont need to short rig don't. I don't feel bad blocking off an entire street that has multiple entry points. I would just like to add that you should have had some traffic cones and/or red tape on the short rigged side of the pump though.

I was at the entrance of the s/d It is a criminal offense to block it! So I used the machince as it was designed in a short rig situation, Trav..Thanx for the load bearing support never knew that, now I will ALWAYS put it under all. You are a great knowledgable man I thank you for telling me this. Now Todd needs to rename this SHORT RIG ALMOST LIKE A PRO.....I am sure glad the job went safe......See ppl learn all the time. Not one operator knows it all like some think. Learn and listen no matter how many yrs U have done it. It makes you a safer operator. I take advice and give it without getting all upset. I thought I was right and was wrong! I am man enough to say so as well!

Its always easy to look at a picture and fine mistakes one thing some of you may not know we have been baking with hot weather, I hope those guys put retarter in the mud along with chilled water, Barone you know how to pump safety he's a smooth operator now a jerky operator would be different.

Looks like you were set up on street - I would recommend orange cones before and next to the out rigger and even caution tape between them.   Sometimes people driving will be looking up at the boom and not see the outriggers.  Another tip is to put orange cones on top of the outriggers - just as another reminder for the operator that he is shortrigged on that side.

"Why not put one on his head"   What an idiotic remark.  Wish we were all as smart as you.

In Bc the rule is you can't work at all in the short side so that would mean you couldn't resurculate your pump if short at all in your rear stabilizers  just a thought for going short
