Pump Operator in court for roadworks deaths 3/3/2009

The man accused of killing two teenage girls on the Sunshine Motorway as a result of dangerous driving plans to make the court process as short as possible.

Patrick George Boyd, 50, faced Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday for the first time charged with two counts of dangerous driving causing death.

The Kiel Mountain man was allegedly driving an Isuzu 500 concrete truck which crashed into the back of a Subaru Forester stopped at roadworks at Pacific Paradise on January 15.

Police will allege Mr Boyd was speeding when he crashed into the car, killing Anna Clark, 18, and her sister Jennifer, 15, from Brisbane about 2.10pm.

Mr Boyd only appeared briefly but his solicitor told the court he planned to apply for an ex-officio indictment.

This path through the justice system usually means the accused will try to negotiate a guilty plea with the Department of Public Prosecutions which will expedite his appearance before the Maroochydore District Court.

The case was adjourned until May.

It was difficult to distinguish where one vehicle started and another ended after the double fatal crash.

Four cars had stopped under the direction of a female traffic controller in a 40kmh zone of the new motorway section when the concrete pumping truck slammed into them from behind.

The Subaru took the brunt of the crash. The vehicle was crushed between the truck and a small Hyundai in front of it.

The girls' father, who was behind the wheel, and a family friend in the front passenger seat, were also hurt.

The driver of the Hyundai was also injured when their vehicle smashed against the white Holden ute stopped in front of it.

A small dark coloured vehicle had been stopped in front of the ute, but it did not stay at the scene.
